NICOLAAS VELDTMAN
Nicolaas Veldtman
(Nicolaas Edwin Johan Veldtman, born 4 January 1929
in
West-Cod,
died 2 February 1998 in
Ommeland) was
from 1981 to 1989 the first
prime minister of Kronenburg. He
studied English language and literature at the Danish
University in
Denestad and
there he met his future wife Paula Konink (*1931); they
married in 1958 and had three children.
Political
career
Veldtman's political career started in 1973, when he
took a seat in the
Noordkamer
for his party, the
CGU. After
1976 he was party leader and chairman of the CGU in the
Noordkamer and in 1981 he became the country's first prime
minister. Although the CGU had enjoyed a comfortable
absolute majority in the Noordkamer since 1969, Veldtman
didn't manage to keep his party that popular. After the 1984
elections, the CGU had to form a coalition government with
the
LKP; the
first one since 1965. After the 1988 elections the CGU
became the second party after the LKP, who chose for a
coalition with the
PSV, putting
CGU in opposition. Nicolaas Veldtman drew his conclusions
and resigned as party leader. As prime minister he was
succeeded by
Sander Opland Falting
(LKP). |
