MARKENLAND
With around
333,000 inhabitants, Markenland is the eighth largest
municipality of Kronenburg. Apart from the capital city of
Denestad, which was founded in 1714 by largely Danish
immigrants, the municipality consists of the villages
Aabije, Hendrikstad, Holgersbije, Oostmark, Marken and
Euvelgat. Klaas Boersma has been the mayor of Markenland
since 2008. Markenland has attracted Scandinavian immigrants
throughout the last centuries. Although the larger part of
them consists of Danes, many Swedes, Norwegians and
Karstonians
also found their way to Markenland. Some historians claim
that Kronenburg must have been the
Vinland
Norwegian vikings discovered many centuries ago, although no
archeological proof has been found for this theory.
